Opiate & Prescription Drug Dependence

Overview

Certain drugs, commonly prescribed for pain, insomnia, weight loss, nerves, and even some mind altering Over The Counter (OTC) drugs, may lead to dependence in some people even when they are taken properly. These drugs along with the illegal drug heroin, are known as opiates. Opioids are powerful narcotic drugs that are highly effective for treating pain, but they are also highly addictive. Examples of prescription opioids that lead to dependence are Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Codeine, Morphine, and Fentanyl. Opiate abuse has devastating effects not just on the person using the drug, but also on family members, employers, and friends. Opiate dependence is an increasing problem in many communities. An estimated 20% or more of individuals interested in getting help for their dependence avoid seeking treatment due to the stigma attached to the condition or limited availability.

Thanks to new regulatory guidelines, office-based treatment for opiate dependence is now available.

Sunshine Behavioral Medicine is a designated treatment center for opiate dependence with the use of Suboxone. Office based treatment is generally preferred due to its lower cost, flexibility, privacy, convenience and minimal work loss.

Our treatment program consists of comprehensive assessment, medical detoxification, patient education on addiction, individual and group therapy, and outside support groups.
